NFB New Hampshire Annual Scholarships

(Application & Rules)

Scholarships Offered by

The National Federation of the Blind of New Hampshire

The NFB of NH offers 2 scholarships each year in memory of former members who generously gave money to further the education of blind and visually impaired students of NH.  Floyd Callward was a member of the NH Affiliate in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He wanted to help blind students continue their education beyond high school.  Theresa C. Herron was a former student of Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts.  She was dedicated to helping others who were legally blind, especially young persons.  She assisted them towards higher education so they might become self-supporting and independent.  Ms. Herron was a member of the Governor's Commission on Disability, volunteered much of her time to the NH Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped, and she served as President of the NH Affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind from 1982 to 1988.

Eligibility Rules

  • The $1,000 Floyd M. Callward Memorial Scholarship is open to any legally-blind resident of NH or a legally blind non-resident who is currently or who will be studying in NH at the post-secondary level next fall.  No restrictions apply as to field of study.

  • The $500 Theresa C. Herron Memorial Scholarship is open to legally blind NH school students to pay for extra services or devices for successful study and achievement.  Preference is given to students in grades K-12 as per Ms. Herron’s wishes, but post-secondary students may also apply.

The Scholarship Committee of the NFB of NH reviews all applications and selects the winners.  Applications and supporting documentation must be received by no later than midnight of January 31 of each year.

The finalists will be notified as soon as possible, and must attend the entire NH State NFB Convention, where they will be interviewed.  Scholarships will be awarded at the banquet dinner.  Room, registration and banquet expenses will be paid by NFB of NH for the winners. The Convention is open to NFB members and all interested persons.
